Postcodes are used by the UK postal system (Royal Mail) to automate the sorting and delivery of mail around the country. The postcode itself is generally made up of a 2-part code, the out-part and the in-part. There exist roughly 3,000 out-part codes and 1.8million full postcodes.
Our full list contains all postcodes along with their corresponding longitude and latitude coordinates. These coordinates will work with any system using the latlon system, including Google Maps.
How To Use The Postcode Data
There are an unlimited amount of uses, and you can use the data however you wish. The latitude and longitude coordinates can be used to calculate distances, plot the location of an address on a map, or for simple postcode validation on web forms. The Google Maps API accepts all of our data and makes it very easy to create hundreds of different types of map. Accurately pinpoint an address or calculate distances, either as the crow flies, or by taking into account road layouts using our postcode data.
The data is available as both a comma-seperated CSV, or as a full MySQL-compatible dump. Both formats are normally very easy to import into most systems. Most databases also accept SQL dumps or CSVs. The data is well-formed and can easily be converted to another format using a converter, or tweaked and exported using Microsoft Excel, or OpenOffice. Once payment is received you’ll receive a unique download link for both formats of the data.
As a bonus, as well as the full UK postcodes, we will supply you with a comprehensize UK gazetteer, which contains all the populated place names in the UK, along with other features such as national parks and lakes.
